12 Best Doctor Who Moments Of 2014

9. Saluting The Brigadier (Death In Heaven)

Here's a moment for the Classic Series fans and it's no doubt one which warmed the cockles of your Whovian hearts. Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart - or just 'the Brigadier' for short - was, and still is, one of the show's most beloved characters and the sad passing of the actor who played him, Nicholas Courtney, means he'll never get the chance to cross paths with the Doctor again. Up until now his memory has lived on in the series through his daughter Kate Stewart, played by Jemma Redgrave, who was introduced as UNIT's scientific advisor in The Power of Three and returned to Doctor Who to aid the Time Lord in his battle against Missy (more on her later - you'd probably already guessed she's made this list!) in the Series 8 series finale. Doctor Who has never been a show to let real life get in the way and this year it took the opportunity to honour the Brigadier in the only way it knows how - by turning him into a Cyberman and having the Doctor salute him in a graveyard. It's what he would've wanted. It really is what he would've wanted, of course - the Brigadier dreamed of the day the Doctor would salute him and in Death in Heaven he finally got the mark of respect he'd been waiting for. To get a salute from the Doctor is a pretty big deal but the Brigadier is more than deserving. He is sorely missed.
