Until this point in the show, Rick had done plenty of nasty things. He'd killed Shane, lost his mind after the death of Lori, and kept his friends in the dark about the true extent of the disease that had wiped out most of the population. But this season four scene was on a whole other level, and ushered in a new, darker edge to Rick's personality.

Travelling to Terminus, Rick, Michonne and Carl were set-upon by Joe and the Claimers, a group who had been hunting Rick since he was forced to kill one of them a couple episodes earlier. The first shock comes for Daryl, who sees his friends and realises who he's been tracking this whole time. Trying to spare them of Joe's wrath, Daryl is beaten.

Things escalate from there, as Joe threatens Rick and one Claimer, Dan, prepares to rape Carl. Willing to do anything to save his son, Rick snaps and tears out Joe's throat with his teeth, and as Daryl and Michonne take care of the others, he disembowels Dan. A true turning point, though not a particularly nice one.
