12 Emotional TV Moments That Made Us All Cry In 2013
5. Downton Abbey - Matthew Dies
Most scenarios of the will-they-won't-they tension that's been ever so popular in this list have ended in happy endings. Booth & Brennan tied the knot, Jim and Pam are married with kids and living in Texas, the list could go on. One that absolutely did not end happily was that between Matthew Crawley and Lady Mary Crawley. When Downton Abbey began, Matthew Crawley was the central figure of the show, the heir to the Earl of Grantham after the previous heir's demise on the Titanic. After a tense on and off relationship between Matthew and Mary lasting the better part of a decade, the two eventually married and bore a son called George. Moments after first meeting George in the hospital, however, Matthew is suddenly killed when his car runs off the road while trying to avoid an oncoming truck. There was no exit announcement made by Dan Stevens, the actor who played Mr. Crawley, and the death was a complete surprise, especially the death of the central character. The fact that Matthew was so full of life in his last moments added great insult to injury. Leaving George, their infant son as the heir to the Earl of Grantham is an incredibly bold move that will no doubt significantly alter the show's course. No spoilers please, however, because the new season hasn't aired yet in the U.S. By the way, I know this was technically 2012, but it was a Christmas special so I'll still consider it fair game.
