Dr Lillian DePaul is one of the really interesting characters on the show, and one of the few qualified female doctors we see. She’s recently started at the hospital alongside Masters et al, and is aiming to conduct similarly pioneering research, only in her case it’s in the field of cervical cancer.

She works with Virginia Johnson and acts as a figure of inspiration to her, an extremely intelligent, strong woman who has continuously fought against stereotyping in such a male-dominated environment. Of course, the tragedy behind the character, and a major reason for her chosen subject of study, is that she suffers from cervical cancer herself.

While the majority of the show is based on actual events and real people, the writers of the show created DePaul purely for TV, and yet managed to make her one of the most fully-realised characters.
