Masters and Johnson’s research broke down a lot of barriers in America, in terms of conducting scientific research into sexual behaviour and response, and also just starting a conversation about a topic that was largely kept very much behind closed doors. In fact, many cite them as key factors in the ‘sexual revolution’, and in particular it had a great impact on women and their independence.

The series shows this gradual impact, and a lot of the resistance to it, but it also could be considered to be breaking down barriers. It’s a show about sex, but it isn’t gratuitous, it’s scientific; it shows strong females taking control of their bodies and their sexual independence; it makes a very research-driven, science-y topic appeal to a broader audience. And, of course, there’s this from Sheen:

“I never thought I would get used to having a naked woman in front of me masturbating with a glass dildo to the point where I would almost not notice that they were there doing it anymore — and that the conversation about dinner that night would be more interesting, but I actually broke that barrier in this show.”
