12 Hilariously Bad Attempts To Reboot Classic TV Shows

6. Fawlty Towers

Beloved in the UK, it is little wonder the American networks have been keen to remake Fawlty Towers for quite some time. Many have tried and failed. So far there have been three awful attempts; The first version went to pilot for ABC in 1978 titled Chateau Snavely. It was based in a highway motel and starred Golden Girl Betty White and Harvey Korman in the role normally assumed by Basil Fawlty but little else was heard of it as the pilot episode was not taken any further. The second was the 1983 series Amanda's which was notable for flipping the gender roles around. This time Bea Arthur starred in the Basil Fawlty role. Despite faring better than its predecessor, Amanda's ran for just four months before being cancelled. The most recent attempt came in 1999 from CBS in the form of Payne. Even with a positive reception and the blessing of John Cleese, who agreed to appear in it if there was a second series, only eight episodes of the JoBeth Williams and John Larroquette-fronted series were aired before it was cancelled. Thankfully this was the last US attempt to date but many more versions of this classic exist across the world.
