Comedian and actor Alan Davies was always cited as a potential Doctor Who in the run-up to the show's return in 2005. Such speculation was firmly rooted in his performance as the titular Jonathan Creek in the BBC's Saturday night murder mystery series throughout the 1990s. The fact that it was produced by original series producer Verity Lambert no-doubt added fuel to such speculation.

Aside from Davies' Doctorish performance, Jonathan Creek filled a gap for many grieving Doctor Who fans throughout the 1990s by featuring a large number of former Doctor Who stars. Mary Tamm, Peter Davison and Paul McGann are among the names that would appear throughout the years. However, the very first episode features a brilliant, albeit brief, performance by Colin Baker. He plays an adulterous artist with a talent for painting topless clowns and an appalling ponytail.

It's a delightfully lascivious performance by the former Sixth Doctor, who is having a ball with lines like "I just want you to come over here and make me bark like a sea lion". Now there's an image.
