13 Reasons Why: 10 Overlooked Positives To The Show
6. The Terrific Supporting Characters
The show's main characters are a bit of a problem. While he was excellent in season one, from season two onward Clay Jensen turned into a selfish and unlikable jerk with a disturbingly possessive attitude towards his crushes.
Ani was a weak and pointless character who's personality was noticeably similar to Hannah's, indicating she was only there as a replacement for her. As for Hannah Baker, she's an interesting character and Katherine Langford's performance was magnificent, but she was problematic.
Nevertheless, the show actually has a great round-up of supporting characters. Justin, Alex, Jessica, Tony and best of all Zach (who, following Clay Jensen's descent into unlikability, became easily the most lovable character on the show) are all very interesting and engaging characters with emotionally compelling story arcs. Other characters such as Tyler, Courtney and Marcus have been far more hit-or-miss, but they still have plenty of great character moments to their name.
While the continuation of the show beyond season one always felt questionable since this seemed like a one-season story, it's arguably been justified since these characters were so engaging.
