13 Reasons Why Review: 10 Ups & 9 Downs From ALL 4 Seasons
8. It Never Shied Away From Important Issues
The creative team behind 13 Reasons Why prided themselves on the show's refusal to shy away from issues that aren't tackled all too often. Over the course of its run, it delved into topics such as bullying, sexual assault, gun violence, racism, self-harm, drug use and, of course, suicide - using its rich characters to raise thought-provoking questions.
Furthermore, it also highlighted the importance of positive issues such as friendship, identity, love, sexuality and, perhaps most important of all: Why we should all be nice to each other.
Now, it didn't always do these issues justice and it certainly dropped the ball with a number of them, either shoehorning them into episodes only to never follow up on them again or, at times, just handling the sensitive subject matter all wrong. But if nothing else, it started conversations that should have been had a very long time ago.
