86 is the latest anime you'll see on this list and is slowly growing a following after a fantastic two seasons. So, now would be the perfect time to jump on board this train, as its future looks set to keep climbing and climbing, and you don't want to miss out.
86 tells the story of The Republic of San Magnolia, a "utopia" at war with autonomous machines known as Legions. To combat them, they send out their own supposedly autonomous/unpiloted drones. However, they are far from unpiloted, as each one is manned by one of the 86, a group of citizens considered to be sub-human by The Republic.
As you can tell from that description, this series focuses heavily on social commentary. It addresses prejudice, racism and the futility of war - which should sound pretty familiar to AOT fans.
But, it's not all doom and gloom, as the action in the series is pulse-pounding, and the CGI used to create the drones blends perfectly with the 2D animation. It's not often that anime fans praise CG, but it's well deserved here.
