15 Best Companions In Doctor Who History

1. The Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney)

The man. The legend. Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, founder of UNIT, had the difficult job as the Third Doctor's boss. They drove each other spare but also respected one another.

The Second Doctor first met the Brig in The Web of Fear in 1968 and he was always somewhere in the background until the Brig died in the Eleventh Doctor story The Wedding of River Song. His was a character death brought on by the death of his real life alter ego Nicholas Courtney in 2011.

Though he wasn't a regular after the arrival of Tom Baker, the Brig still made several appearances through the 1980s and he even cropped up in one episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, too. His legacy continues in the form of his on screen daughter Kate Stewart who serves as modern UNIT's Chief Scientific Advisor. He'll never be forgotten.
