5. After Life Season 2

After Life was Ricky Gervais extremely clever and affecting return to comedy in 2019. When asked where the idea came from, he explained that he began to imagine a man with a superpower: say anything you want, care about none of it and at the end of the day, kill yourself.

With that as the jumping off point, he began to detail how a man would find himself in that position. Losing something so special and powerful was the only way and After Life went from the farce comedy it began as to the poignant and, at times, upsetting season it became.

Season two is a triumphant return for Gervais and the rest of the cast. The series picks up with Tony still struggling with the loss of Lisa, something that continues to affect him day by day. The second series expands to allow the audience to get to know some of the supporting characters a little better.

Though the season is not without its own tragedies along the way, it still manages to retain that sense of fun, balanced on the knifes's edge with sadness, that the first season had. There are moments when logic is stretched a little thin (how long exactly did Lisa record those messages for?) but these are easy to forgive.

Both series however fail to answer one simple question: is there really only one therapist in that town?
