Adapting the Fallout games for the screen was always going to be a risk, what with the gaming franchise's horrifically dark tone and convoluted worldbuilding, but Amazon found a way.
The secret? Keep the nastiness of the games - the mutated killers, cannibals, death and decay - and give it a shiny coat of humour. Fallout is an action-packed, thematically dense drama at heart, but it's so light on its feet and blackly comical that every twist of the story is easy to digest and easier still to enjoy.
Starring Ella Purnell as an intrepid survivor determined to save her kidnapped father from the outside world, and Walton Goggins as a mutated bounty hunter searching for more than just a fresh kill, the series paints a vivid picture of a world without much hope, buried in devastating secrets.
With brilliant set pieces, a host of compelling performances (not just from Purnell and Goggins, but also Kyle MacLachlan, Aaron Moten, and Leslie Uggams), and a stunning final cliffhanger, Fallout is an absolute blast. Bring on season two!
