Gather the hankies ladies and gents, it's the big one.

Sure we'd seen crew die and come back in TOS but if ever there's a moment in Star Trek history that not only fans, but general movie audiences know, it's this one.

Faced with an impossible situation and with the needs of the many in the balance, Spock logically and calmly leaves the bridge of the limping Enterprise to initiate the necessary repairs in Engineering and save the ship from the imminent explosion of the Genesis Device.

Of course the ship is saved but with the sacrifice of her captain. The ending is full of mixed emotions and at the time, genuine disbelief that Spock had actually been killed. As fans know, the Kobayashi Maru scenario at the beginning was set in to add a red herring after news leaked about the demise of the Vulcan. 40 years on and it still kicks where it hurts.

But what would Star Trek be without Spock? A very different landscape and Nimoy couldn't stay away with both directing and acting duties on the sequel to The Wrath of Khan. At least its title kept his return a secret if nothing else... ?!

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
