11. Catch-22

Catch-22 Kyle Chandler
Hulu

Who: David Michôd, Luke Davies (writers); George Clooney, Ellen Kuras, Grant Heslov (directors); Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie, Christopher Abbott

What: Based on Joseph Heller's classic novel, Catch-22 follows artful dodger Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier who is furious because so many people he's never met are trying to kill him, but also because his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. If he avoids his requirements, though, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a sinister rule that specifies a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.

Why: Heller's novel is a seminal work of fiction for a reason. Boundary-pushing, thought-provoking, outrageous, hilarious, and thrilling, if Hulu's adaptation can capture even some of what makes the story work on page, they'll have a good series on their hands. And with so much talent behind and in front of the camera, there's hope they'll be able to.

Where & When: Hulu/C4, TBC
