4 Ups & 4 Downs For Star Trek: Section 31
7. UP — Deus Ex MECH-ina
There is one absolute highlight of Star Trek: Section 31. That is Zeph. That is Robert Kazinsky. The character, a marvellous mass of mech tech — the "MACHINE" in his bio released last year — initially provides for a lot of the lighter (and genuinely funny) moments in the film, as the gentle giant fumbles and stumbles his way through the space station and plenty of its walls. "I said don't bring me."
The actor is a Star Trek fan, and that is an understatement. Kazinsky's passion (and knowledge) is truly inspiring, as is his openness about being autistic (for this writer in particular). He clearly had the time of his life on set, noting as such on Instagram as he wrapped, and proudly sporting his Section 31 combadge at the London premiere. Zeph might have met an unfortunate end, but it would be a shame if we didn't see Kazinsky somewhere else in Star Trek in the future!
On the whole, the entire band of actors behind the band of "misfits" do a fine job in their respective roles. Omari Hardwick gives a standout and nuanced performance as Alok Sahar, a character with almost as 'murky' a past as Georgiou. Sam Richardson also gives a notable turn as Star Trek's second only chameloid.
