Who could have guessed that after more than a decade of hiatus we could have so much new Star Trek coming to our screens today?

Star Trek: Discovery may have proved controversial, but it certainly gave the franchise the kick it needed to get back on track. Star Trek is in abundance right now, with Discovery’s season three imminent and potential films in development including Quentin Tarantino’s much rumoured project. (Maybe don't hold your breath for that one, though.)

Discovery gave us Star trek: Picard and the welcome return of classic The Next Generation characters and a route for the show into the unexplored 25th century, and we will soon see the release of Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated series coming by the creators of Rick and Morty.

Despite having so many Trek series in development, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is far from just one of many. The show has the potential not only to stand out in its own right but to define the future of the franchise, be it through spin-offs or more likely by providing plot threads which future Trek series can take on and continue to explore.

Strange New Worlds has a chance not only to engage with audiences but to set a course for Star Trek to follow into the next fifty years of the franchise.
