Let me take a moment to squeal like the nerdy girl I am.... .... Ok, that's done. Almost Human is my favorite new show of the season. Yes, it's about robotic cops. Yes it's a very accessible sci-fi flick. It's easily consumable for the masses -- something which I know is not exactly a popular trait for the more hardcore sci-fi crowd. And yes, it uses the very familiar trope of human-aspiring androids. But it does all these things very well. It's also a rather humorous buddy-cop show. It also stars very attractive actors for both women and men. When it comes to science fiction the first thing I need to get into a story, is to understand the world. Almost Human does a great job giving the viewer an introduction to of the world of the show. The scenery is lush. There are just enough familiar elements in the story so the viewer can easily fill in the gaps. There are no crazy fashion styles, no weird cars, and no science that isn't at the very least slightly plausible. It's also nice to see a police procedural where there's no reason to make fun of how perfect and convenient the science is... it's the future, and the writers can do whatever they want. One of my favorite inventions of the show so far? DNA bombs. How cool is that? Also, keep an eye out for a surprisingly interesting supporting character in Mackenzie Crook (the guy from Pirates of the Caribbean who kept losing his wooden eye). Seriously. Despite his fondness for fedoras, he's great in the show.
