7 Reasons Sherlock Series 4 Should Be The Last

Think about how the first series cast sheet must have looked in 2009. A relative unknown with the name of a boarding school breakfast and that nice bloke from 'The Office' and a few British films. Both good actors, to be sure, but nobody could have predicted the heights of Hollywood fame each would achieve just a few years later.

Martin Freeman would soon be cast as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s epic three-part adaptation of ‘The Hobbit’, catapulting him to international recognition. Meanwhile, Cumberbatch built a steady Hollywood pedigree with supporting roles in films like ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, ‘12 Years a Slave’ and even joining Freeman in ‘The Hobbit’. Pretty soon, he began collaring larger roles in films like ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, ‘The Fifth Estate’ and ‘The Imitation Game’.

Both actors are currently the proud owners of multi-film contracts with cinematic leviathan Marvel, which are bound to tie up their schedules for a long time. Not only is Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange character set to play a major role in two upcoming 'Avengers' films, Freeman will reprise his role as Everett Ross for 2018’s 'The Black Panther'. Frankly, it’d be a minor miracle if their schedules align long enough to together in any room this side of 2021, let alone 221B Baker Street.

Rather than promising a fifth series that probably won't see the light of day this side of the next Olympics, draw the series to a satisfying conclusion here and let it breathe. When and if the stars (and their schedules) align with a script and filming dates locked in, only then announce a special episode and let the fan hype take care of itself.

So that's why we think that 'Sherlock' series five is never going to happen: logistics. Do you agree? Disagree? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
