7 TV Shows With Disappointing Second Seasons

3. Friday Night Lights

true detective
NBC

Adapted from the book and film of the same name, Friday Night Lights tackled various societal issues including class, race and education through the lens of high school American football. After a grim start in which star quarterback Jason Street is left paralysed for life from a brutal tackle, the series settled into slice of life drama.

From episode of Season 2 however, the down-to-earth atmosphere is dead and buried. Instead, we get a bizarre tale of two teens covering up the murder of a would-be rapist. Despite an obvious self-defence plea on their end, they decide to cover it up I Know What You Did Last Summer style. Affairs, Christian rebirths, tornadoes, meth dealers, ferrets and fights followed in a show going completely off the rails.

Jason Street eventually makes his way to Mexico for an experimental treatment involving shark stem cells and then it was all shelved. Thanks to the notorious 2007-08 writers’ strike, this ridiculous show was cut off mid season.

Fortunately, Friday Night Lights restored the far better received style of Season 1 and the show remained back on track for the rest of its run.
