7 TV Shows With Disappointing Second Seasons

2. True Detective

2014 smash hit True Detective left fans clamouring for more right up until more actually arrived. Completely unrelated to the Louisiana-set, esoteric thrills of Season 1, Season 2 introduces us to a small army of new characters in Los Angeles. Endless shots of freeways break up the slower, gloomier pace and stiff dialogue of the two lead detectives, a traffic cop and a monologue-prone crime boss.

Season 2 provides some interesting themes and twists along with a solid performance from Colin Farrell but sadly the bad outweighs the good. Its storytelling feels disjointed and far too vast and complicated to be resolved comfortably in just eight episodes. A surprisingly epic finale does little to redeem the tonal mess of the rest of the show and its central mystery never captured audience’s imaginations the way the infamous Yellow King of Season 1 did.

Though generally watchable, True Detective season 2 is very much the less than stellar middle child of the series. With unlikable, weakly developed characterisations and dialogue more befitting a bad comic book or video game than TV drama, fan disappointment at the time was very understandable.
