7 Ups & 5 Downs From The Arrowverse In 2019
3. Predictable Storylines
While all of The CW's shows can suffer from their tendencies to be on-the-nose, it mostly doesn't take away from the narratives they are attempting to tell. This year, however, the Arrowverse experienced a number of on-the-nose and predictable story moves that just highlighted a complete lack of self-awareness.
Supergirl suffered from it on a more episodic level in that certain episodes of Season 4 were weighed down by it, but this didn't impact the otherwise great season as a whole. Arrow, unfortunately, wasn't so lucky.
The flash-forward narrative promised a lot and delivered little, and perhaps the reason for that was because it was built upon the most predictable 'twist' in the history of the show as, for weeks, they had us wondering who the moody and unlikable Blackstar was - only to reveal that she was the daughter of Oliver and Felicity. Now, call this writer cruel but, it's hardly a twist when you reveal a mysterious character to be the core couple's child. We all saw it coming, and this resulted in a ton of predictable drama in 2019.
On top of that, an Olicity baby was the last thing that Arrow needed as it was still attempting to distance itself from its less-than-stellar days.
