7 Ways AMC Should End The Walking Dead
5. Jump Forward To A Post-Rick Future In His Final Moments
With Rick's impending departure from the show, The Walking Dead writing staff have a pretty monumental problem on their hands. Having him leave without dying will result in his shadow hanging over the entire narrative going forward, with the writers needing to come up with a pretty major excuse for him to not be around, while simply killing him needs to carry more weight than every other casualty combined.
However, killing Rick doesn't have to necessarily be a bleak, tragic thing. Instead of having him die and leaving viewers with the question of "well, what happens next?", the character's final moments could be intercut with glimpses of the future and the world he's helped create. It could show us how the surviving cast have all prospered in the years since, maybe picking up with an older Maggie and her baby, a flourishing Alexandria and potentially even a rehabilitated Negan, who's finally become the man Carl thought he could be.
Whether he goes out via walkers or at the hand of a new villain, briefly jumping forward would add a sense of hope to his death, allowing him to take it with a smile, and giving the audience an insight into the world both them and the character will be leaving behind.
