8 Fears When Watching Classic Doctor Who With Your Partner

It can go one way or the other.

There comes a time in almost every relationship when Whovians hear those words they've been longing to hear. "Can we watch some old Doctor Who?" While this may be a cause for celebration on the surface (who doesn't love their romantic partners sharing in their passions?), it may also be a doubled edged sword.

What if  your significant other doesn't like classic Who? It's important to remember that not everyone sees the classic Doctor Who era with the same sense of nostalgia and wonder. It's entirely plausible that your partner, even through good intentions, may be more than a little underwhelmed with vintage Who.

Through wobbly sets, fluffed lines, low production values and dodgy special effects, it's understandable that to those who are more used to modern day CGI and practical effects, these older episodes can seem incredibly dated. While Whovians view these episodes as part of the wonderful tapestry that makes up the entire history of Doctor Who, non-fans or "casual viewers" may find the often hammier style of the older series somewhat laughable.

Thus, fellow Whovians, here is a quick run down of some of the possible reactions your non-Whovian partner may exhibit in trying to share your love of a 52 year old science fiction programme.

Romantic partners that want to share a love of Doctor Who are few and far between and should be commended for their efforts. Fear not, though, because if one is mentally prepared, it's possible to handle any one of these scenarios with panache.

8. Rise Of The CBA-bermen

The Cybermen are perhaps the perfect metaphor for indifference when watching Doctor Who. Cold, emotionless and maybe even a little demanding... so try not to awaken the Cyberman within your partner!

Perhaps one of the most galling and disappointing potential reactions when showing a significant other some of the classic Doctor Who you love so much is general indifference.

Indeed, sometimes even a negative reaction is better than one of impartiality. It's a natural fear that classic Doctor Who can leave your boyfriend or girlfriend so unaffected and cold that they simply don't care one way or the other. The best art inspires some kind of reaction from most people so it can be particularly disappointing when someone you care about has little to no reaction about the show you adore.

If your soulmate exhibits this response, fear not. It's almost certain that, with a little bit of perseverance, a Classic Who story will emerge that will illicit some form of positive reaction. Promise.
