8 Scary TV Treats Coming This Halloween
5. Lore
When & Where: Amazon Prime from 19th October
It's not often that a podcast is the basis for a TV series from a major studio, but that's part of what makes Amazon's Lore, the second season of which premieres on Prime this week, something a little out of the ordinary.
Aaron Mahnke's podcast exploring true life stories of the mysterious, unexplained and downright creepy has been running since 2015, building up a devoted fanbase and winning numerous awards. Still, the step up to a regular TV series is a pretty big deal.
Lore is an anthology show dramatising the true-life horror stories Mahnke has previously explored on his podcast, retaining his soothing voiceover as he narrates the various supposedly real-life inspirations behind such horror classics as werewolves, haunted houses and creepy dolls.
Season 1 got mixed reviews for how it handled the transition from podcast to dramatised TV, but also earned Mahnke and Lore some new diehard fans.
The new season switches things up a little with outgoing showrunner Glen Morgan (The X-Files) replaced by Sean Crouch (The Exorcist), so expect the mystery elements to be dialled back in favour of more straight-up horror. It also promises to engage long-term fans of the podcast who were disappointed that all the Season 1 stories were dramatisations of podcast episodes by delving into new material that Mahnke has not covered before.
