5. Religion
Two religions were outlined in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. The Prophets of the Bajorans and the Changelings of the JemHadar The Bajoran people are a deeply spiritual people. They believe in their gods, i.e. the Prophets and these gods are tangible. Proof is not needed of their existence, however, faith is needed as proof that they care for the Bajorans. The running question of the series is: How can an entire planet have faith in gods that did nothing to intervene in the atrocities that occurred during the occupation of the planet. Well there was that one time when they made thousands of Dominion ships disappear in the wormhole en route to the station BUT they also exacted a penance from Sisko for doing so. If the Bajorans are hands off gods, the Changelings are control freaks. They have literally created the people that worship them, the JenHadar, who also double as their army. In the series, even Sisko reveres the Prophets as gods eventually but the Changelings never receive this treatment. Are gods only gods when they are all powerful but yet do not intervene? When they live up to our highest ideals of morality? When they literally create their own worshippers? What constitutes a god? Even if you have gods should you be willing to die for them.
