Once upon a time, Game of Thrones was a pedigree of television, and for the most of its eight-season run, it was. Yet as plots became grander, and the cast list extended, it became increasingly difficult to find the right balance of its scale, pace and focus.

When its final season arrived, it had so much story to get through in its shortest season yet, and sacrifices had to be made. Any semblance of a patient script was long gone, and what was left in its place resembled the hurried conclusion of a school boy’s English exam when time is almost up. So many of the final season's conclusions weren't the issue. It was the pace of which we reached them.

Yet it wasn’t just the breakneck pace that the eighth season had acquired, it was the flurry of uncharacteristic actions from people we had spent dozens of hours with. Brienne crying over Jamie, Bronn’s turn on the Lannister Brothers, and we’ve already spoken about Jamie, Cersei and Daenerys. The final season was doused in an uncaring approach to its characters, and Wiess and Benioff’s eagerness to move onto other projects was painstakingly apparent – if the infamous coffee cup wasn’t enough to show it already.

While it is no simple task to bring a beloved show to a widely loved end, Game of Thrones proved how even the mighty can fall. And it was utterly heartbreaking.
