9 Awful TV Characters We're Supposed To Root For

1. Ross Gellar & Rachel Green - Friends

Friends Ross and Rachel
NBC

Oh yeah, stuff's about to get real touchy for anyone who still considers Ross & Rachel the greatest romance in the history of television. Each of the six main characters have some major flaws - don't we all? - but these two suffered a weird, enduring bout of codependency that kept either of them from truly maturing.

Let's start with Rachel. She slept with her ex-husband two years after leaving him at the alter, while he was engaged to her friend, Mindy. She initiates a break from Ross (which eventually leads to an official breakup), then tries to sabotage almost every relationship he has after that (and a few of Joey's, oddly enough) out of jealousy and vindictiveness.

Also, she accepts an accidental proposal from Joey immediately after giving birth to Ross' child. And to close out the series, she was going to take their mutual child to live in Paris after accepting a new job.

And yet, somehow, she's not the most terrible person in that relationship. Ross is irrationally jealous, clingy, whiny, condescending, sexist, homophobic, a bit of a rage-aholic, and a terrible father to his son, Ben. He may also be the world's worst boyfriend.

Ross more or less cheated on Rachel (break or not, that's pretty awful), then cheated on Bonnie with Rachel, then dated one of his students, then dated Rachel's sister. And just for good measure, he also makes out with Chandler's mom and Joey's girlfriend, Charlie.

So maybe they really do deserve each other. Because they're both awful human beings. (Though they'd likely be divorced by now. So...ENJOY THE MEMORIES.)
