3. Code Of A Killer
John Simm went down in the Doctor Who history books when he was introduced as the malevolent Master and his stint as the renegade Gallifreyan defied the realms of time and space itself when he hypnotised the British public into electing him as their new Prime Minister before enslaving the entire human race with his army of tyrannic Toclafane. It was just one of those days. His Whoniversal reign of terror might be over (you know, since the Master had a sex change and everything!) but you don't have to depend on Series 3's climactic finale The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords, and his subsequent return in The End of Time, to get your fix of Simm-ulating action. There's Code of a Killer, for starters. The two-part police drama is currently airing on ITV (if you missed part one, you can catch up online!) and tells the true story of Alec Jeffreys' discovery of DNA fingerprinting and its introductory use by Detective David Baker. John plays Alec alongside David Threlfall who was originally offered the role of Brannigan in Series 3's Gridlock. As an extra tidbit of Doctor Who trivia, Code of a Killer is directed by James Strong whose Doctor Who credits include Series 2's The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit and the 2009 Easter Special Planet of the Dead. So there you go. Something to get your teeth into.
