1. "Everyone's Waiting" Six Feet Under
OK, so this isn't the most original pick for top spot in the world, but this is honestly the most emotional I have ever been watching anything, films included. I didn't watch Six Feet Under on its original run, instead getting the box sets and only finishing the series earlier this year, and as I read a lot of Internet blogs, I already knew more or less how this famous episode ended. Regardless of this fact, I was still unprepared for the emotions I would feel watching it. I wept... honestly I did. I have never wept like this with a TV series, and I doubt I will weep this much with a TV series again. For those that don't know, and don't worry, this isn't really a spoiler for the series, the final moments of the final episode (to one of the best TV series of all time when it comes to exploring the theme of death) shows how everyone one of the central characters on the show will die in the future, as the youngest daughter in the Fisher family emotionally leaves home for the very first time. Watching her driving away and about to start her new life in New York would have been emotional enough just on its own, but showing scenes of herself as an old woman, dying in bed... as well as scenes showing her brother and mother passing away just hits you like you wouldn't believe. Honestly, I was shocked about how powerful this last scene really is. Just listening Sia Furler's chilling song "Breathe Me", the song that is played over this final scene brings tears to my eyes still, as I remember the last time I saw the Fisher family. The Fisher family, in the couple of months I watched the series became like my own TV family, and I loved every single member of the cast in separate but special ways. The beauty of the show was that the family felt like a real family. They weren't always likable, particularly the central character Nate and his complicated girlfriend Brenda, however this isn't a criticism but a great strength. They all felt real to me... more real than any characters I have seen on TV since, so when I saw each one of them die their deaths had more of an impact because they too felt real. There is a reason this appears at the top of most peoples lists of the saddest TV episodes of all time, because it really is the saddest. If you haven't seen the series, I would recommend watching the entire show from start to finish just so you can experience the greatest final minutes of a TV series there has ever been. It truly is a masterclass in how to make someone cry. Truly breathtakingly epic. Disagree? Have I missed a great example from this list? Please, educate me in the comments section. I'd love to hear examples of what episodes made you cry, or why the ones I have included stood out for you or shouldn't be included in this list at all...
