During the Halloween two-parter in the current series of AHS, the spirit Edward Mordrake appeared to each of the freaks and forced them to reveal the dark secrets of their past. One of the most revealing flashbacks belonged to Elsa Mars, who explained how she lost her legs. During her younger years, Mars worked as a dominatrix in Germany, where she was once drugged and tricked into performing in a snuff film. While intoxicated and unable to protect herself, Mars had her legs sawed off by a sadistic doctor. Moral of the story? Don't work in Germany. Some fans have tried to delve more into the identity of the doctor who performed the procedure in the first place, noting some striking similarities between this mystery practitioner and Doctor Arden, the deranged physician from Season 2's Asylum. Arden had a nasty habit of removing limbs during the Asylum run and it was also revealed that he had secretly been a Nazi doctor prior to his tenure at Briarcliff Manor. Could Arden be the same doctor who sawed off Mars's legs? The links between season two and four are already the most explicit, given Pepper's and Sister Mary Eunice's crossover appearances, so this theory isn't a huge stretch. Admittedly though, it would be a bit strange if Arden didn't notice the striking physical similarity between his snuff film victim and Sister Jude, Arden's nemesis at Briarcliff. That would raise a whole new set of questions... Let the sub-fan theories commence!
