American Horror Story: Sarah Paulson's Characters Ranked WORST To BEST

3. Sally McKenna (Hotel)

Sarah Paulson American Horror Story
FX

Sally McKenna allowed Paulson to have a go with a role with a lot more darkness than her previous characters. A drug addict and ghost trapped inside the Hotel Cortez after dying on its grounds, Sally spends her days and nights brutally punishing drug addicts in an attempt to combat her own self-loathing.

Desperate to be loved and sporting a seriously cool punk-rock aesthetic, Sally is depressed, mad, needy, creepy, violent and endlessly engaging. She's one of Paulson's most unlikeable characters, and yet manages in her surprisingly happy ending to have fans rooting for her.

Paulson thrives best when playing troubled, morally ambiguous characters, and Sally McKenna allows the actress to show off her skills in that regard. It's not a major role, especially compared with the actress's appearances in the show's earlier seasons, but it sure is a blast to see Paulson cut loose and portray a character as dark and twisted as Sally.
