8. Murder, She Wrote (1984)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir5czCiOpsk Although IMDB lists this program as still running, it's my sad duty to inform you that barring an unexpected miracle MSW is unlikely to ever return to the screen. Although some people might be quite glad of that the majority of us couldn't get enough of this semi retired teacher turned mystery author who had a knack for turning up in the right place at the wrong time. An independent woman who represented the kind of free thinking that American TV needed, JB Fletcher was just as likely to tackle anything Magnum PI could handle. And then some. Rather than wait for CSI type forensic details to present themselves, Ms Fletcher used deduction and solid reasoning, making every law official she encountered look like an idiot who wasn't doing their job. It was common sense when you taught about it. The theme was written by John Addison and is a very simple piece of orchestral work with a piano key introduction and some brass section mumbling as we build to a fantastic reveal. Addison was a film composer better known for his TV scores such as Sleuth and Swashbuckler in the late 70's and the project taken after the majority of his film work had ended was an unexpected hit. Speaking of unexpected we seriously hope rumors of the 2014 relaunch of the series aren't true and, if they are, the name isn't used - as there will never be a woman quite like Jessica and a place like Cabbot Cove again.
