By far, the biggest twist in Battlestar Galactica came around the mid-season break of the last season, when the Colonials and Cylons are able to put aside their differences to follow an obscure signal that leads to their long-held destination, Earth.

They arrive with jubilant celebrations, but it’s all cut short when they discover the world is a lifeless, post-apocalyptic husk. It appears that the Fleet has finally arrived at their destination, but centuries after nuclear destruction has killed everyone. The search for Earth had been the driving thrust of the series from the very beginning, and the devastation that the characters feel was shared by the audience.

But the kicker was still to come. In Sometimes a Great Notion (an episode which has appeared three times on this countdown already), it is discovered that the ancient inhabitants of Earth were in fact Cylons themselves. And so the Colonials’ dream of reconnecting with humanity was not only dead, but a complete fantasy to begin with. It is a brutal blow which reshaped the remaining few episodes of the series, whilst also making their eventual victory all the more satisfying.
