4. It's A Social Commentary

A lot of TV shows these days don't really have much to say for themselves but Charlie Brooker's futuristic stories certainly do as they tap into our current way of life dominated by razor-thin Smart Phones and tablets and shines a spotlight on where we might be heading as a society. One of the most terrifying aspects of Brooker's storytelling is that some of his occasionally far fetched stories are actually extremely plausible, considering how obsessed with our phones and gadgets we currently are and how much some of us thrive off "reality television" like
Big Brother and
The Only Way Is Essex etc. The "White Bear" episode of Black Mirror was a cross between Derren Brown's two-parter
Apocalypse and Big Brother, which is a terrifying combination both on paper and in practice. It is actually quite easy to imagine watching someone film a terrible event on their mobile phone instead of step in to help, which is what makes Black Mirror so compelling.
