Bob's Burgers: 15 Greatest Episodes
5. Topsy
Burger(s) of the Day: I Know Why the Cajun Burger Sings/Tarragon in Sixty Seconds Burger
At the school’s science fair, Louise plans on presenting her usual volcano diorama but substitute teacher Mr Dinkler has a strict “no volcanoes” rule and as a huge Thomas Edison fanatic, he forces her to do a project on the inventor. As revenge on her new teacher’s rude attitude, Louise plans to do a re-enactment of Topsy the elephant being electrocuted by Edison. And given how much of a jerk Mr Dinkler is, we can't help but root for her.
Topsy is also a great Gene episode. Up until this point, we didn’t know much about his musical abilities - he just seemed to enjoy making random sounds and fart noises on his keyboard. However, the song Electric Love is a genuinely beautiful love duet with clever lyrics, such as “they’ll say aww, Topsy at my autopsy” and it gives Gene’s character a bit more depth and humanisation.
If you ignore the massive historical inaccuracies, Topsy remains one of the funniest Bob’s Burgers episode of all time, full of strong voice performances and loaded with sharp jokes.
