DC's Stargirl Season 1 Review: 10 Ups & 2 Downs

3. The Supporting Cast

Stargirl Luke Wilson
DC Universe

It really shouldn't be understated how well Stargirl uses its rather large supporting cast of characters. Other shows in this genre often struggle to give a large group of people adequate material - resulting in the actors having to remain in the background a lot of the time without actually partaking. That's not the case here - and, as a result, the cast shines.

We can't delve into the other actors without talking a little about how fantastic Luke Wilson is as Pat Dugan. A career-best for the veteran, he nails the goofy nature of the character but shines whenever he tackles the dramatic material centred on Pat's family.

Speaking of which, Amy Smart is delightful as Courtney's kind-hearted, unassuming mother Barbara, while Trae Romano does a great job making us laugh at Mike's quirky dialogue. Christopher James Baker and Neil Jackson are chilling (no pun intended) as the primary villains, while the rest of the ISA's colourful characters have their moments throughout the season.

It's the JSA who really get a chance to shine though as Yvette Monreal gives us a Wildcat who is as layered as she is angry in Yolanda, Anjelika Washington is hilariously witty as the endearing Dr. Mid-Nite Beth Chapel and Cameron Gellman does a great job making the inherently angry Rick Tyler (Hourman II) an empathetic character.

And then there's Jake Austin Walker who, in the tenth episode, delivers what is undoubtedly one of the best TV performances of the year.
