Disenchantment: 7 Things Season 2 Must Do
2. Go After Fantasy Tropes Harder
The world building and animation of the settings has been fantastic so far. We’ve seen a range of typical settings from old castles to swamps, from Elf kingdoms to ancient desert pits.
That said, there wasn’t a great deal of humour from the world itself. The characters all fit into fantasy tropes, and they themselves were mostly funny, but things were just a bit lacking. The griffin was more in line with what fans were expecting, and most of what Sorcerio did too. But having made a big deal of Bean’s groom getting accidentally impaled on the Iron Throne in the trailer, there were very few moments like that in the show itself.
It’s perfectly possible to weave a compelling narrative while still having fantasy fodder getting chuckles throughout. Though the stories are rather different, in essence it’s not too dissimilar to what Shrek did. Maybe it’s more fantasy creatures, maybe it’s subverting expectations or maybe it’s through references, but we need more winks to fantasy. Groening’s already said he doesn’t want to parody Game Of Thrones again but there’s thousands of other things they could use.
Of course, it can’t just be the Futurama of fantasy...
