Disney Plus: 10 Things You Must Watch First
6. Dumbo (1941)
In a recent shareholder meeting with CEO Bob Iger, he affirmed that the 1946 film Song of the South would never be released on their new streaming service as it is "not appropriate in today's world" thanks to "outdated cultural depictions". This seems unfair, as there are plenty of films in the library now that are either as bad or worse: Lady and the Tramp, The Aristocats and Peter Pan have all made the cut, with a message tagged on that they contain "outdated cultural depictions".
Dumbo is also one such film and is arguably the most insensitive of the lot. Sure, a film about an elephant born with big ears who learns how to fly doesn't seem all that offensive. But aside from the obvious slaves that set up the circus every time it comes to a new town, there's the rather blatant racial stereotypes when the crows appear.
What's more offensive is that one of the crows is named Jim, as in Jim Crow, named after US segregation laws ordering the separation of black people and white people.
This is interesting to watch as it shows a double standard regarding what they are willing to show on the service and what they consider to be "out of bounds".
