Doctor Who: 10 Most Poetic Quotes From The Show

3. From 'An Unearthly Child'...

"Have you ever thought what it's like to be wanderers in the Fourth Dimension? Have you? To be exiles? Susan and I are cut off from our own planet - without friends or protection. But one day we shall get back. Yes, one day." €“ The Doctor
This is perhaps the quotation that sums up the next fifty years of the show; it's incredible to think that it was made by the First Doctor, in his first serial. It's an extremely influential line in the show; the "wanderers in the Fourth Dimension" is clearly something picked up on in the aforementioned Fourth Doctor quotes, and the idea of loneliness is hinted at with the line, "Without friends or protection." It's touching that even at this early stage of the Doctor's time on-screen, when he was still an anti-hero, that he regards friends and protection in the same bracket; the word "wanderers" is a lovely way to describe how he travels, and reiteration of "One day," sounds both optimistic and indicative of the Doctor always looking to the future. It's not one of the more flowery quotations from the show, but it's subtle, simple and deftly chooses its words; it sums up the TARDIS's travels and paves the way for the show's future. Appropriate perhaps, for a character with one eye forever on the horizon.
