Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why We Need A War Doctor Spin-Off

10. The Doctor As A Warrior

John Hurt's incarnation of the Doctor did not identify himself as being worthy of using his own self-given pseudonym. The name 'Doctor' was supposed to symbolise hope and make people feel safe, but the War Doctor was born because the universe needed a warrior capable of turning the tides of war. As Paul McGann's Doctor said: "I don't suppose there's any need for a Doctor anymore. Make me a warrior now." John Hurt's character was truly a secret regeneration of the Doctor's, but he was not THE Doctor as we knew him, he was a weapon of war. The Doctor has always had his brash moments, and some brief moments of cruelty, but we have not seen the Doctor in such a dark light for a whole regeneration. A series showcasing a 'gloves-off' Doctor in a seemingly unending battle with the Daleks will show us exactly what the Doctor is really capable of. It would give context to the remorse and restrained anger shown by the older regenerations of the Doctor.. Doctor Who's increased funding over the years has proven that the show is capable of giving us more than just cheesy alien costumes and lacklustre imagery; the show is moving more towards showing off its action epic potential. A series dedicated to the Time War and the War Doctor would be the perfect setting for developing that potential further.
