15. What's In A Face?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PASP_Gje1eM From Last of The Time Lords: 30 June 2007 This was a case of the writer getting it spectacularly right only to realise the error of his ways and try to back-pedal his way out of it. It was the moment that Captain Jack Harkness became the Face Of Boe. We Whovians are always moaning about plot holes, stories left hanging in the air and unconvincing ideas. This moment was none of those. It seemed to draw together so many plot themes. Yes, it was left hanging in the air, but for once in a very positive way. It was anything but an unconvincing idea. It convinced and convinced until the rumble of fans murmuring grew to a drone like a swarm of bees coming through the woods. The writers tried to write it off as mere 'theory', but honestly, do you believe that? There were too many pointers that made it true. Many called for a new series involving the 'Face', or at least some spin-off stories within Doctor Who. I wonder if there was more than a little kidology going on in all of this. Torchwood certainly got a boost of interest through it and the cynical might say that 'product placement' doesn't only consist of carefully positioned on-screen Coke cans. Either way, it was a brilliantly satisfying gem that promised so much. I for one still wish it would come true.
