A hugely obvious choice, Martin Freeman plays the companion role in Moffat's other big hit, Sherlock. Freeman is a wonderfully gifted actor who in Moffat's words, "finds poetry in the every-man". He's capable of the hilariously funny, extremely moving, and often, amusingly grumpy, which would certainly work well with Peter Capaldi. Even if he doesn't become a full-time traveller though, why not draft him in for an episode or two, as a Craig-like friend for the Doctor? He recently claimed that he's a fan of the show, but hasn't actually been offered a part. Maybe after the Ponds, the Doctor could make friends with another couple, in Freeman and partner Amanda Abbington?
17. Michelle Keegan
A favourite with men across the country, Michelle Keegan is another immensely popular northern soapstar, much like Jenna Coleman. Although she's only ever appeared in Coronation Street, Keegan is a fans favourite; ballsy, exciting and sweet. Whether she could cut it in the BBC's biggest drama when she's more known by the tabloids than the Baftas is debatable, but everyone has to start somewhere: who knew that popstar Billie Piper would make an amazing companion? The Mancunian actress is leaving Corrie this year, so will no doubt start acting in other roles.
