WARNING! SPOILERS: The moment has come for spoilers and speculation concerning the Doctor Who Fiftieth Anniversary Special: "The Day of the Doctor". Please leave your comments below. As always we begin with swirling gray, an otherworldly melody and a policeman. Bittersweet memories of late 1963 fade into present day as we round the corner to Coal Hill School. Clara lectures a class where the Doctor's first companions, Ian and Barbara, taught fifty years before. One minute twenty seconds in and writer Steven Moffat thrills us with a stroke of brilliant symmetry. We're in safe hands. The past will be honored and the future prepared for. "Day of the Doctor" is a hint at a shift in point of view. It's a tantalizing glimpse into the character of a significantly altered Doctor. Up to this point we've followed the adventures of the random wanderer, now we are left with a man of purpose. If the Doctor has a goal, how will it shape the stories around him? How will his companions be affected? Is the TARDIS aware of this and will she go along with it? The possibilities are delightfully intriguing. In order to speculate about where the Doctor is going, it's necessary to examine where he's been. Experience informs character. The Doctor has lived many lives and it's especially fascinating when those lives converge. Throughout much of the new series shifts in the Doctor's character have been subtle. "Day of the Doctor", however, completely changes the Doctor's back-story and we see a tremendous amount of growth. Let's follow the Doctor into the Time War, scrutinize his actions and find out where he ends up and why.
