Doctor Who: 10 Actors Who Could Replace Jenna Coleman

6. Idris Elba

Idris Elba is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who speculation because back in 2013, when rumours of Matt Smith's replacement as the titular Time Lord were at an all time high, his name - along with pretty much every other name under the sun, to be fair - was hotly mentioned as one of the most likely candidates. Ultimately this wasn't to be the case and, while he would've made a wonderful Doctor, it's likely he would make for an even better companion. His acting credits are impeccable, for starters. After appearing in the classic series The Wire and then as a detective on the BBC's acclaimed Luther, he has also played Heimdall in the Marvel series of Thor films so his previous experiences have put him in good stead to take on the varied challenges that life in the TARDIS would offer. Recently he made comments to the press about his dissatisfaction with the Marvel movies so it seems like his acting calendar could have been blown wide open. What's more, a black companion, although not without precedent (see Martha Jones), would add some sorely needed diversity to what has historically been an overwhelmingly non-diverse group.

Hi there, What Culture-ers! I'm William Graff, a 40-year old freelance writer from the wilds of Capitol Hill in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I enjoy many things such as beer, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, record collecting, stand-up comedy, long aimless walks, and of course the Broncos, which is required by law if you live here. I appreciate all feedback for my writing, but I prefer cash and/or deleted Smiths singles in lieu of praise. Rock on!
