In the reboot of the series, millions of teenage girls (and full-grown male adults) would find themselves sobbing as David Tennant's Tenth Doctor absorbed a ridiculous amount of radiation to save Earth and Donna Noble's €œGramps.€ However, Tennant was not the first Doctor to absorb obscene amounts of radiation to save the planet Earth. In Planet of the Spiders, the Third Doctor returns to the Crystal Caves of Metebellis 3 to help stop the Eight Legs once and for all. He is told repeatedly by his allies "you will die if you return to the caves,€ and each time the Doctor stoically replies €œnevertheless, I must go.€ The Doctor returns a great crystal to the Great One of the Eight Legs, warning her that her plan will ultimately destroy her. True to his warning, The Great One destroys herself, and The Doctor must return to earth knowing that he he has taken in a fatal amount of radiation from the Crystal Caves. €œI had to face my fears,€ he tells Sarah Jane, when she questions why he had to go back. €œIt was more important than going on living.€ The Brigadier stands watch as Sarah Jane says good bye. The Third Doctor uses his final words to comfort his companion: €œA Tear Sarah Jane? No, don't Cry. While there's life, there's...€
