Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Guest Stars Ever

The TARDIS gets ripped from its casing and embedded in a human body. Before 2011, the suggestion of that on paper would have sent shivers down many hardcore Whovian's spines, as it could have gone so very wrong so very easily. However, Series 6's The Doctor's Wife showed just how well it could be done, and Suranne Jones' performance was a big part of that.

She's just as mad as you'd expect for a time machine trapped in a human body, matching the Eleventh Doctor for sheer manic alien weirdness. The way the two argue is perfectly played by both actos, capturing the closeness of the relationship that the two travellers must have developed over years of being the only two constants in each other's lives.

However, there's another layer to Jones' performance. There are moments where watchers can see that the TARDIS really cares for the Doctor, and other moments where it's evident just how excited the character is to have a physical body that can interact with the world in a new way. It's part of what makes her such a likable character and makes her death so heartbreaking to watch. It's also a huge part of what makes the idea of having the TARDIS become human work as successfully as it did.
