Doctor Who: 10 Examples of Amazing Symbolism

9. Fairytales & Stories

Doctor Who Doctor And Idris ...Moffat on the other hand, prefers to see the Doctor as a character from a fantasy book; that much is clear even from the very hiring of Neil Gaiman to pen an episode. And it angers some fans who prefer to see the show as science fiction, but Doctor Who has definitely taken more of a fantasy route since the Moff took over the reins in 2010. Almost instantly the new Doctor became a story overnight, literally, as Amy told everyone about her new imaginary friend. He later told her that we're "all stories in the end" and tried to communicate with her by popping up in history books, and when the Ponds finally departed, it was them that communicated with the Doctor via a book. The Doctor was been compared to a wizard and a trickster in 'The Pandorica Opens', which he originally claimed was just a fairytale, and when he finally retires to a cloud in the sky, it's Clara telling children the story of the Doctor that coaxes him back into action. Of course, Moffat also treats him like an alien at times too, but under his reign, the Doctor's never felt more of a mystical being than a physical one. Which certainly adds a degree of mystery back to the character, and it's possibly why Eleven feels so mercurial.
