10 HUGE Revelations About Disney Doctor Who In Russell T Davies' New Memoir
3. The War Between Might Not Be Dead
Just in case there was any doubt, RTD recently confirmed that he won’t ever return to Doctor Who for a third go.
However, he’s not put The War Between behind him just yet. On the contrary, the way he writes in his memoir makes it seem like he's still eager to make some of those aforementioned other ideas.
On The War Between the Earth and the Moon specifically, he says that, "it could still happen... sometimes these ideas just have to wait."
When discussing The War Between the Clever and the Not, he then implies that he's looked into the possibility of removing the rights to The War Between from Disney, saying:
"The idea seems to be fading, because they say it would be hard to extract the crucial three words of The War Between title from the Disney+ contract – though I've got to say, no-one's actually tried."
Could this be the real reason The War Between the Land and the Sea hasn’t gone out on Disney+ yet? Are Russell and the BBC trying to get the full rights from them? And if so, why is Disney seemingly clinging on?
Technically, there is a precedent for RTD spinoffs continuing once he’s left Doctor Who. Both The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood enjoyed further series during Steven Moffat’s tenure, and with The War Between being so disconnected from Doctor Who itself, it would basically be like RTD doing an original standalone show.
Not that anyone’s seriously expecting The War Between to continue. It’s as dead as a fish on a slab (too soon?).
