10 HUGE Revelations About Disney Doctor Who In Russell T Davies' New Memoir
4. Russell Thought Doctor Who Would Go To Netflix
Following the end of the Chibnall era, the BBC was looking for an international streaming partner to help them make Doctor Who even before RTD got involved, as they felt this was the next step for the show.
When RTD did come aboard and they had a creative plan, they were able to pitch to the streaming world.
RTD reveals that they pitched to "all" of the streaming platforms, including Netflix and Amazon, and at the time, he felt that if Doctor Who was going to end up on any streaming platform, it was going to be Netflix.
However, for some unspecified reason, they "couldn’t quite make it work."
Out of all the streaming options on the table, RTD actually thought Disney was the most unlikely scenario, mostly because of the size and scale of the franchises they deal with, like Marvel and Star Wars. He says that he thought Disney was "way out of our league."
He also admits that he had concerns about Doctor Who becoming an American co-production, saying:
"I did have some fear about getting an American streaming platform involved. I worried they might ruin it."
In hindsight maybe he should've trusted his instincts...
